RNAO Best Practice Spotlight Organization Initiative - April 2009 - March 2012

The Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network (HNHB LHIN) is one of 16 sites across the province that has been given the opportunity by the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) to become a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO). Our LHIN has the largest population in Ontario, extending from Burlington through to Niagara, Simcoe and Brantford. This is a unique and innovative opportunity for a LHIN to participate as a BPSO candidate.

How will HNHB LHIN citizens, patients and health care providers benefit?

Implementation of RNAO Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) will be facilitated by sharing resources, and learning from all participating organizations. A Project Coordinator will be responsible for bringing organizations together to promote learning, sharing and collaboration between HNHB LHIN sites. The potential benefits to our patients and staff are significant and will be evident as we implement and evaluate the impact of RNAO BPGs across our LHIN during this three-year initiative.

We are focusing on the following BPGs:

Star Prevention of Falls and Fall Injuries in the Older Adult
Star Risk Assessment and Prevention of Pressure Ulcers
Star Embracing Cultural Diversity in Health Care: Developing Cultural Competence

These organizations will be working collaboratively to implement RNAO Best Practice Guidelines across the HNHB LHIN:

  • Brant Community Healthcare System
  • Haldimand War Memorial Hospital
  • Hamilton Health Sciences
  • HNHB Community Care Access Centre (CCAC)
  • Hotel Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitation Centre
  • Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital
  • Niagara Health System
  • Niagara Region Public Health
  • Norfolk General Hospital
  • St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton
  • West Haldimand General Hospital
  • West Lincoln Memorial Hospital

On March 24 2010, the HNHB LHIN celebrated the official launch of its BPSO candidacy with representatives from all partner organizations. It was a day of learning, sharing, and celebration.

If you are a nurse or interprofessional team member and want to know how you could be involved or learn more about this initiative, check out the RNAO website at www.rnao.org for more information regarding BPGs, and consider attending BPG events within your organization, or becoming a Champion for your organization.
